In a funk.

I have been in a bit of an allergy funk this week.  Not sure exactly why either.  The ragweed pollen does typically start to get going in mid-Aug, but it’s not showing up on the pollen counts yet. (likely waiting until the 1st week I’m back at school to kick in good and make me miserable) I spent the weekend at 3 different friends houses and they all 3 have pets.  Or maybe it was just time for allergy shots?

I had my annual visit with my allergist this week and that always proves frustrating for me.  Since my allergies are so chronic I manage all my meds myself - she gives me prescriptions for a years supply and I decide what I need when.  She always asks what my symptoms are and how I know when to start the different meds.  This is always a hard question for me because my allergy symptoms are so different from the norm, and so hard for me to explain. I really don’t think she gets it when I mention things like being grumpy, in a fog, headaches, and not sleeping.  I usually give her a combo of what I know she wants to hear and what I actually experience - just in case she suddenly gets it!

So anyway, this week I’m in a bit of funk, and after the usual exam and lung function test my allergist declares me just fine and sends me off with a handful of prescriptions.

Last night, after 3 nights of not really sleeping and a day a just being in a funk I decided to use my inhaler before bed.  It couldn’t hurt and it just might help.  I was finding it odd that just 24 hours earlier my lung function was great and now I was using my inhaler (my asthma isn’t the “fast acting” type - especially when I didn’t come into contact with any big triggers yesterday), but anyway I used it and slept like a baby!

Today has been much better! :-) I also got my shots today so I’m very hopeful the allergy funk will be gone for awhile!

I wish that I could be better understood when the allergies get rough, but I’m very glad that I have relatively free access to the drugs that make them better! :-)

I have been trying to space out my allergy shots to every 3 weeks, but I feel so much better when I go every 2 weeks.  The dr was a bit concerned about that, but the shot lady said it was fine.

What’s interesting is that when I went to Washington State earlier this summer I went 4 weeks between allergy shots, and I felt GREAT the whole time (and I wasn’t taking ANY extra meds, just the normal stuff) I get back here and I can’t even go 3 weeks without my shots.

So the question is, am I just allergic to the east coast?  Or is it that I can handle going 3 or 4 weeks between shots once, but not twice?
